Two Handled Barro Negro Cup

£110.00
Sold

A double Barro Negro cup featuring two circular handles, made by Maestra Magaili in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Height: 10cm
Diameter: 8.5cm

Black clay (or barro negro) is a pottery tradition native to Oaxaca. In the 1950s, a potter named Doña Rosa devised a way to change the finish of the clay by polishing, or burnishing, it before firing. Just before the formed clay piece is completely dry, it is polished with a quartz stone to compress the surface. After firing, the piece emerges a shiny black.
