£95.00
Sold

A small trinket bowl made from Barro Negro in Oaxaca, Mexico. Features spike details round the rim, based on ceremonial vessels found in the archaeological zone of Xochicalco. Each piece is handmade and burnished to a gun metal finish by artisans in San Bartolo Coyotepec.

Black clay (or barro negro) is a pottery tradition native to Oaxaca. In the 1950s, a potter named Doña Rosa devised a way to change the finish of the clay by polishing, or burnishing, it before firing. Just before the formed clay piece is completely dry, it is polished with a quartz stone to compress the surface. After firing, the piece emerges a shiny black.

Height: Approx 7cm
Diameter: 10cm

As this is a handmade piece, each will vary slightly from the photo.
