TAPERED BARRO NEGRO VASE, H 18cm

£110.00
Sold

A smooth vase made from Barro Negro featuring a rounded bottom and tapered form. A collaboration between Maestra Magali and an artisan from a neighbouring community, Atzompa.

Barro Negro is a magical clay, heavy with history. It’s only found deep within one carefully, guarded pit not far from the village of San Bartolo Coyotepec. Archeological relics have shown us that it was known to the indigenous peoples in the region, who fired the pieces to high temperatures turning the clay a light grey or white. Modern-day pieces are fired smoke-fired at a lower to temperature to achieve the deep black associated with this clay. This beautiful plate, with it’s universe-like surface, acts like a journey through time of these techniques and histories. The main surface is matt black, but where the pieces have been closest to the heat, the fire has transformed the surface to be slightly metallic and leaving smoky white fire marks.

Recommended for use alone as a sculptural piece or to hold dried flowers.

Height: 18cm
Width (at base): 7cm

These pieces have been sourced exclusively for Mantel in collaboration with Terra Ancestral.

Care: gently clean the surface with a damp sponge or cloth only, do not submerge in water.

This is an artisan made item and bears marks of the maker's hand and unique handcrafted process. Any marks, cracks or fire licks on the surface are inherent to this process and not a fault.
