An oval dish featuring two small circular cutouts for handles, handmade from a clay that is naturally black. Traditionally handmade by women in small villages in Columbia. No artificial chemicals are used in its production and it is moulded into shape by hand. Each piece of Tierra Negra is handmade from a coarse gray clay. A finer terracotta clay is then applied thinly over the entire surface as a glaze. After drying, this is burnished with very smooth pebbles or semi-precious stones such as Tiger's Eye. The cookware is then placed inside earthenware urns and fired in large earth kilns. A coarse organic dust of dried herbs and grasses is thrown into the urns immediately after firing. This burns rapidly and reduces the oxide in the glaze producing the black stain finish. It is know for its use in cooking, as unlike most ceramics the pot can be placed directly on the hob without cracking.

Beautiful as a stand alone sculptural piece or to house trinkets. This ceramic dish is traditionally used to sauté vegetables, as well as for serving dishes.

Height: 8cm
Width: 30cm

As this item is vintage and handmade, subtle imperfections and signs of wear may be visible.
